Creativity, ideas, knowledge and innovation are the key underlying value drivers for firms. Several instruments and methods exist to appropriate returns from innovation, amongst them patents and other intellectual property (IP). Hence, patents and other IP are more than just legal instruments they have become true business tools. This seminar explores the approaches and methods that have developed in practice to measure the value of patents, with a specific focus on the treatment of patents and other technology-related intangible assets. In particular qualitative and monetary valuation of patens and the importance of intangible assets for SMEs. The international financial accounting standards (IFRS) will also be explained taking into account the main developments in measurement thinking, methods and practical applications. The subject also represents a new challenge for staff of patent offices and PATLIB centres who are increasingly being asked about patent valuation as part of a company's assets. A mix of presentations and practical hands-on case studies will enable participants to reply to many of these questions.
Classroom training
On completion of this seminar participants will have a basic knowledge related to patent valuation and be better equipped to answer questions in this regard.
Participants should have a basic understanding of key innovation and IP management issues and a very good command of English, both orally and in writing.
