One aspect of this course will be to demonstrate how easy it is to access legal status information directly in European national patent registers from entry points in the European Patent Register, as well as on national and European Espacenet servers. A connectivity map will be presented. All concepts introduced in this course will be reinforced with hands-on exercises. A further aspect will be to illustrate the key features of the extended patent family and worldwide legal status data (INPADOC) available on Espacenet and the European Patent Register. The patent family concept will be presented, with a description of its application in EPO databases. A detailed illustration of worldwide legal status data will follow, with dedicated attention to the issues of the nationalisation of regional and international patent applications ("national phase"). To better understand the usefulness of the worldwide patent family and legal status databases some strengths and stumbling blocks will be elaborated. Additionally, information will be given on who delivers what kind and what amount of data to the database.
