This self-paced course aims at getting a deep knowledge of the Global Patent Index (GPI) that provides worldwide bibliographic data and abstracts. It allows users to perform professional patent searches and provides for sophisticated search functionalities. The training will be delivered in two phases, during which the participants will work through a self-study e-learning module and have the opportunity to test their knowledge in an additional case study. During the course three virtual classroom (VC) sessions will be offered, during which the topics will be summarised and questions answered. The course equally serves as comprehensive training for those who start working with GPI, or simply as a refresher.

The distance learning course will explain in detail the functionalities of GPI and demonstrate their usefulness on the basis of a case study. In particular, the following topics will be dealt with:
• Patent Information services for experts
• Global Patent Index (GPI): basic functions, queries and interfaces to other products
• Practical exercises including special features
• Direct interfaces to other EPO patent information products


A balanced mix of theory and practice, providing for interactive discussions by means of webinars and an online forum will help to generate new knowledge, clarify open questions and allow for immediately putting into practice the acquired know-how.


Once successfully completed, participants will be able to efficiently use the tool and the direct interfaces it provides to other patent information products, with a view to completing the information obtained via GPI. After the course participants will have acquired a thorough understanding of GPI and its features, the know how necessary to make the best use of the various functionalities and parameters and provide of the skills needed to perform meaningful searches, including the use of special features in GPI.


Participants should have a minimum of one year experience of patent searching, including searching by classification codes. A good understanding of the patent system is needed to understand the context of patent information products in general. A good command of spoken and written English is required.

Technical requirements:

In order to attend the on-line course participants need a computer with an internet browser and a high-speed broadband internet connection. For joining the virtual classrooms, no additional software is needed, however, security settings on local Firewalls need to be checked. For more information please see the "VC guidelines for participants" under "Downloads". The use of headsets is recommended.
