This distance learning course has been designed for patent examiners at national offices and comprises a series of ten virtual classroom (VC) sessions on the use of EPOQUE Net. These virtual presentations are embedded in an e-learning course which also comprises additional practical exercises. The VC sessions are live and scheduled on Wednesdays once a month. They will help to broaden skills of EPOQUE Net users at national offices. Tips and tricks on efficient use of the EPO's professional patent search tool will be brought to participants by experienced EPO examiners. Features of possible new roll-outs will be included in the course. There will also be enough room to tackle any questions asked by participants.

During the VC sessions, the participants will have the possibility to communicate live with the experts and ask questions (see "VC guidelines for participants"). The VC sessions will be recorded and released in the course. Each one takes approximately 1 - 1,5 h. See dates under "Venue details".

• Introduction to EPOQUE Net and getting started
• Important databases in EPOQUE Net, concepts
• Proximity operators and truncation
• Patent families: fami/refi, help
• Classification, CPC codes
• Recap on basis of a concrete example
• Synonyms, other classification schemes and a few truncation operations more

At the end of this course, participants will have a good understanding of EPOQUE Net and its databases, query language and preparations. Participants will be able to use EPOQUE Net for the performance of their search tasks as examiners.


Basic knowledge of patent search. Access to EPOQUE Net. Experience in use of EPOQUE Net would be an advantage. Good command of English, both orally and in writing.

Technical requirements:
In order to attend the on-line course participants need a computer with an internet browser and a high-speed broadband internet connection. For the virtual classrooms, the EPO uses Cisco WebEX, so initially some WebEX software will be installed on your computer. Security settings on local Firewalls need to be checked. For more information please see the "VC guidelines for participants" under "Downloads". In order to make full use of the VC sessions, we recommend to use headsets.
