The seminar covers clarity and unity issues at the search and examination stage within the framework of the European patent granting procedure, including also insufficiency of disclosure. The course includes the presentation of strategies for dealing with clarity, unity and sufficiency of disclosure issues and reviews the legal background, with the emphasis on practical cases in the fields of engineering (physics/electricity/mechanics) and non-engineering (biology/pharma/chemistry). The harmonisation of practice at the national offices - and the relevant legal differences - are also considered.

On completion of this seminar participants will have

·        gained an insight into the problems associated with clarity, unity and sufficiency of disclosure issues in applications at the search and examination stage,

·        looked at efficient strategies to deal with such issues, and have gained a basic knowledge of harmonisation of practice.


Participants must have a minimum of 2 years of search and examination experience  or shall have attended the entry level course on clarity and unity (OS08-2013 or OS08-2014).
The present course can preferentially be combined with one of OS14-2014 (novelty and inventive step - intermediate level) or OS15-2014 (novelty and inventive step - advanced level) which take place right after OS11-2014. A good command of English, both orally and in writing is expected.
