This self-paced training course deals with practical aspects of novelty and inventive step, with a clear emphasis on exercises and examples. The learning path refreshes the different topics and proposes exercises and an assignment having a different degree of difficulty.

Once successfully completed, participants will be able to effectively assess novelty and inventive step in line with the EPO practice (Guidelines and Case Law).

A balanced mix of theory and practice, providing for interactive discussions by means of webinars and an on-line forum will help to generate new knowledge, clarify open questions and allow for immediately putting into practice the acquired know-how.
Participants should have a minimum of one year experience of searching or examining patent applications. A good command of spoken and written English is required.
In order to attend the on-line course participants need a computer with an internet browser and a high-speed broadband internet connection. For the virtual classrooms, the EPO uses Cisco WebEX, so initially some WebEX software will be installed on your computer. Security settings on local Firewalls need to be checked. For more information please see the "VC guidelines for participants" under "Downloads". In order to make full use of the VC sessions, we recommend to use headsets.
